Visa Waiver Program (VWP)
The Visa Waiver Program is a program administered by the United States government that allows citizens of certain countries to enter the United States for 90 days or less for business or tourism purposes without obtaining a traditional visa. Instead of obtaining a visa, eligible travelers can travel to the United States using the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to their trip.
Requirements for using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP)
An individual needs to meet all the following requirements to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program
- The purpose of the travel must be permitted under the Visitor (B) Visa. Among the business purposes are: (1) consult with business associates; (2 attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference; (3) attend short-term training (you may not be paid by any source in the United States with the exception of expenses incidental to your stay); (4) negotiate a contract. Among the tourism purposes are: (1) tourism; (2) vacation (holiday); (3) visit with friends or relatives; (4) medical treatment; (5) participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations; (6) participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating; (7) enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)
- An individual must be a citizen or national of a VWP designated country
